Austin never stops growing, exploring and discovering new ways to work, play and communicate.  The area's population now tops 1.8 million and it is the fastest-growing media market in Texas.  Austin is young, higher-income and well-educated. There is a large, established Hispanic population and there are more than 135,000 students at local colleges.  The area has profited from continued and diverse economic development that has meant jobs, homes and opportunity in and beyond the City of Austin.

The Austin American-Statesman is Austin’s source and voice; it reflects its spirit, informs and entertains.  The daily newspaper provides the core, reaching about half of metro households each week.  Combined with targeted publications, statesman.com, austin360.com, social media, events and direct marketing, the Statesman is all Austin, all the time.  With this reach and impact, the Statesman has long been integral to the vitality of the area and the success of its advertising and community partners.

The Austin area has a number of strengths

Music and Entertainment

Austin boasts that it is the "Live Music Capital of the World" and attracts musicians, music lovers and industry leaders to the annual South by Southwest (SXSW) and Austin City Limits (ACL) festivals in addition to a boisterous nightlife that is on 365 days a year.  Austin has also become a movie hub and has been discovered as a prime site for film projects and shooting locations.

Technology and Innovation

America's "creative class" thrives in Austin.  In 2010, 24 new startups and corporate headquarters were established in Austin. Companies that are new to the area in 2010 include Facebook and LegalZoom. In 2010, 39 percent of new venture capital deals in Texas were for Austin companies. It is the worldwide headquarters for a number of industry leaders, including Dell, Whole Foods Markets, Freescale Semiconductor and National Instruments.

Government and Education

Austin is the capital of the state of Texas -- a strong economy that would be ranked sixteenth among the world's nations. It is also the home of the University of Texas and Longhorns sports. The Central Austin campus has more than 50,000 students. Other colleges in the area include Texas State University in nearby San Marcos, St. Edward's University in Austin and Southwestern University in Georgetown.

STATESMAN MEDIA

The Statesman's print and online media have an audience of more than 829,000 local adults in a typical week. Its seven-day audience is greater than that of any local television or radio station. The Austin American-Statesman newspaper has been named both "Newspaper of the Year" and "Best Online Newspaper" among the state's largest metros by the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors.

The Statesman's Web presence is among the strongest in the nation. Statesman.com/austin360.com has the highest local percentage reach of any major market newspaper site in Texas.

Over the past few years, the Statesman has invested in the growth of Central Texas. Eight Austin Community newspapers are delivered weekly to the fast-growing communities that surround the central city. A new distribution center at its downtown Austin headquarters provides the latest targeting capabilities.
