2010 Awards

  • MundoHispánico, Georgia’s oldest and largest Spanish-language newspaper, has received multiple awards for journalistic excellence. These awards include: The José Martí Publishing Awards, the Compañeros Award for Media Excellence and the Salvation Army of Georgia.
  • Several CMG properties have received 2010 Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards. Murrow Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that legendary broadcaster Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the broadcast news profession.

    This year’s winners include:

    • KIRO-TV Channel 7 in Seattle
    • WSB-TV Channel 2 in Atlanta
    • WPXI-TV Channel 11 in Pittsburgh
    • WHIO-TV Channel 7 in Dayton
    • WOKV AM/FM Radio in Jacksonville
    • WDBO AM Radio in Orlando
    • WSB AM Radio in Atlanta
    • WZZK-FM Radio in Birmingham
  • The Alabama Broadcasters Association’s fourth annual “Best in Broadcasting Awards” recognized four CMG radio stations: WZZK for Large Market Regularly Scheduled Newscast; WBHK for Large Market Reporter, Julius White; WBHJ for Large Market PSA; and WBHJ for Large Market Morning Show “Buck Wilde Morning Show."
  • WJMZ 107-3 JAMZ in Greenville, S.C., WKHK K95 in Richmond, Va., and KKBQ The New 93Q in Houston were among 50 finalists in The National Association of Broadcasters' 2010 Crystal Radio Awards for their outstanding year-round commitment to community service.
  • The Austin American-Statesman was named Newspaper of the Year and the best online newspaper among the state's largest metropolitan dailies by the Texas chapter of the Associated Press Managing Editors.
  • The Austin American-Statesman and Dayton Daily News were named as finalists for the 2010 INMA awards. INMA is the world’s leading provider of global best practices and marketing ideas for news media companies looking to grow amid profound market change.
  • KTVU San Francisco won a Peabody Award from the Grady School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Georgia for a series of news stories on the shooting of a young man by a transit officer and the controversy and protests that ensued.
  • KRMG-AM/FM news talk station in Tulsa won more awards during the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters Convention and Annual Awards than any other radio station in Oklahoma, with 8 broadcast awards, and was winner of the OAB Metro Market Radio Station of the Year Award.

    • News Feature – Series – for our series of reports called “Postscript from Picher,” a town that was devastated by a tornado in 2009

    • Station Event – for our KRMG Political Events in 2009 “KRMG Beer Summit” and “KRMG Mayoral Smash-Up”
    • Specialty Programming – for our KRMG Mayoral Smash-Up live event

      In addition, our sister stations were finalists for Personality of the Year Awards for:
    • KRAV (Mix 96 Tulsa) – Dave & Nina in the morning (finalist)
    • KWEN (K95.5FM) – Cash & Carey in the morning (finalist)
  • KIRO 7 Eyewitness News won the National Headliner Award for both “Best Newscast” and “Coverage of a Live Breaking News Event” for the second year in a row. The National Headliner Awards is one of the oldest and largest annual programs recognizing journalistic merit in the communications industry.
  • WFTV Channel 9 was recognized with several 2009 Suncoast Emmy Awards in December 2009.
  • Mundo Hispánico won 10 José Martí awards -- 2 Gold, 5 Silver and 3 Bronze -- at the National Association of Hispanic Publications conference at Albuquerque, N.M.

Individual Recognition Awards

  • Sandy Schwartz, National Association of Broadcasters TV Board (2010-2012)
  • Steve Sinicropi, VP/GM Greenville WJMZ-FM/WHZT-FM, was re-elected to the board for the South Carolina Broadcasters Association.
  • Steve Crumbley (operations manager at 107-3 JAMZ/WJMZ) named to Ones to Watch list as part of Radio Ink’s annual list of the Most Influential African Americans in Radio.
  • Mark Krieschen - VP / Market Manager Houston - was voted Radio Market Manager of the Year at the 2010 annual AWRT Star Awards.
  • Johnny Chiang – Houston Operations Manager – was voted one of the top Country PD’s by Radio Inc. magazine during CRS (Country Radio Seminar) in Nashville on February 26.
  • AJC cartoonist Mike Luckovich was named a finalist in the Editorial Cartooning Award category of the Scripps Howard Foundation’s National Journalism Awards. The awards dinner was held April 23 at the Grand Hyatt in Tampa.
  • Rich Jacobs received the Civilian Citation Award for hosting Focus Richmond, a radio program on WKHK FM, WKLR FM, WMXB FM and WDYL FM that highlights community affairs and public interests. The Richmond Fire Department recognized Jacobs for his efforts to foster their marketing activities and inform listeners on fire prevention topics.
