Cox Media Group Calls on DISH to Give Its Customers Access to CMG Stations and America’s Pastime

Viewers Denied News, Entertainment and MLB Opening Weekend Triple-Header

Atlanta – July 24, 2020 – This week, DISH made a calculated and anti-consumer decision to drop many Cox Media Group stations from their channel line-up across 10 markets – channels that their customers have been relying on for critical local news and national programming. DISH’s decision to use its own customers as pawns comes after DISH lost the latest of eight straight litigation maneuvers it has used to try and avoid negotiating with CMG – all the while willfully violating CMG’s copyrights in our local programming.

With its litigation façade shattered, DISH made the callous choice to black out the stations rather than negotiate a fair and reasonable deal with CMG. Over and over, DISH has rejected a “no-strings attached” extension to get the stations back on their service and engage in productive negotiations.

With this blackout, not only is DISH blocking consumers’ access to vital local news, weather and entertainment, they are also denying sports fans access to much of the MLB baseball season, which kicks off this weekend. DISH customers in the CMG TV markets of Boston (WFXT), Jacksonville (WFOX), Memphis (WHBQ) and Tulsa (KOKI) will not be able to watch America’s pastime on Fox, including Saturday’s triple-header featuring the Yankee vs. Nationals, Dodgers vs. Giants and Cubs vs. Brewers. DISH customers are now forced and encouraged to drop DISH so they can find another way to cheer on their favorite baseball teams and watch CMG’s critical news coverage.

It is deeply disappointing that DISH customers will miss the games – especially during a time when watching sports and cheering on their favorite teams can offer a positive diversion. DISH has once again resorted to their scorched earth tactics of removing stations rather than negotiating in good faith. It says a lot about DISH that CMG has agreements in place with every other major cable and satellite provider in the country where our award-winning channels are available – DISH is the only outlier.

Again, we implore DISH to restore the Cox Media Group stations and work with us to come to a fair agreement. Holding their customers hostage is a tired DISH tactic and especially disgraceful in the times we live. If you are a victim of DISH’s outrageous behavior, either switch TV providers or call 800-333-3474 and tell DISH you have had enough!
